Ingredients

For the Cookies:
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 1 stick + 1 tablespoon salted butter softened
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • A few drops of vanilla extract
For the Icing:
  • cups confectioners’ sugar sifted
  • tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • Food coloring red, yellow, green, blue
  • Silver balls or sprinkles for eyes or decoration

Method

  1. I start by preheating the oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. In a big bowl, I cream the softened butter with the sugar using a hand mixer until it looks fluffy.
  3. Then I crack in the egg and add a few drops of vanilla. I beat that in until everything is mixed well.
  4. In another bowl, I stir together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Slowly, I add the dry mix into the wet mix, a little at a time. I stir with a spatula at first and then use my hands to bring the dough together.
  6. I roll the dough out on a floured surface until it’s about ¼ inch thick.
  7. Using animal-shaped cookie cutters, I cut out as many cookies as I can. I re-roll the dough scraps and cut more shapes.
  8. I place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving a little space between them.
  9. I bake them for 8 to 10 minutes until the edges are just golden. Then I cool them completely on a wire rack.
For the icing:
  1. I mix the sifted powdered sugar with lemon juice in a small bowl until it turns smooth and a little thick.
  2. I divide the icing into bowls and add different food colors to each.
  3. Once the cookies are cool, I use a small spoon or a piping bag to decorate them.
  4. I press on silver balls while the icing is still wet to make eyes or decorations.
  5. Then I let the icing set for about 30 minutes before serving.

Fun Animal Shapes to Try

One of the best parts of making Iced Animal Cookies is choosing the shapes. I like using classic zoo animals like lions, elephants, and giraffes. They always look so cute with bright icing and tiny candy eyes.
Sometimes I mix it up with farm animals like cows, pigs, and ducks. They’re perfect for birthday parties or school themes. When I want to surprise the kids, I bring out the dinosaur cutters—T-Rex and stegosaurus are always a hit!
You can also try forest animals like foxes, bears, and owls. They look adorable in autumn colors. And if you’re baking for a holiday, why not add some fun extras like bunnies for Easter or reindeer for Christmas?
Don’t worry if you don’t have animal-shaped cutters. You can use a simple knife or a stencil made from paper to shape the dough by hand. The goal is to have fun and get creative with it!
